Physicist Doon Gibbs, who had been serving as the interim director of Brookhaven National Laboratory, has been named to the post officially, the lab's board of directors announced Friday.

Gibbs became the interim director at the beginning of this year as the search continued for a new leader. Former director Sam Aronson said last February he planned on stepping down at the end of the year from his post, which he had held for six years.

As director, Gibbs will be at the helm of a lab with over 3,000 employees and a $700 million budget.

"[Doon] has demonstrated the strong, effective leadership skills needed to guide the lab through the challenges ahead and to take Brookhaven to even higher levels of scientific excellence," the board of directors said in a news release.

Gibbs joined Brookhaven in 1983 as an assistant physicist and specializes in studying the atomic structure and properties of materials. He studied physics as an undergraduate at the University of Utah and received his doctorate in the subject at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

He has previously served as associate lab director for basic energy sciences and the deputy director for science and technology.
