An East End newspaper, the Press of Manorville and Moriches, will cease publishing next month.

The weekly is a victim of the economic downturn that sharply reduced advertising sales, the company said.

"It is with heavy heart that I write to inform you that we will be closing the Press of Manorville and the Moriches," Joseph P. Louchheim, above left, publisher of The Press News Group, said in a Nov. 15 letter to subscribers.

The company started publishing the edition in 2002 with the idea of "giving residents of southeastern Brookhaven a source for objective and thorough reporting on the news and events shaping their community," he said.

"Unfortunately, the cost of funding a serious news operation has run headlong into the reality of a deep and enduring recession," Louchheim said.

The company will continue covering news of the Eastport South Manor School District.

That coverage will be carried in a zoned edition of the Southampton Press. The company also publishes the East Hampton Press.
