Tuesday is National Equal Pay Day, and the EEOC plans to mark the occasion by participating in a Twitter chat from 1 to 2 p.m. to answer questions about pay disparities between men and women.

National Equal Pay Day highlights how far into the current year women have to work to catch up with what men earned in 2012. Women earn just 77 percent of what men earn, according to the most recent data.

The disparity rises to discrimination when men who do the same work as women are paid more because of their gender.

The EEOC, or the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, enforces laws prohibiting bias in the workplace, including gender pay discrimination.

The hashtag for the Equal Pay Tweetchat is #talkpay, and you can reach the EEOC on Twitter at @EEOCNews.

The chat is sponsored by the National Women’s Law Center.
