In the second Estee Lauder Inc. packing plant closing in recent years on Long Island, the cosmetics company said it plans to shut an Islandia facility operated by its Whitman Packaging Corp. subsidiary.
Layoffs of Whitman's 103 full-time, 219 active part-time, and 213 inactive on-call employees will begin in early May and the plant will close June 30, according to a state Labor Department layoff notice.
Whitman was incorporated in 1970 as Clinique Laboratories Inc., court records show. It mostly packages products for department store displays of Estee Lauder cosmetics.
Estee Lauder, which has a campus in Melville, closed a separate Whitman Packaging plant in Yaphank in 2009, eliminating about 150 full-time jobs.
