Making a federal case for Gen Z

The federal government is the largest employer in the United States with more than 2 million full-time employees But the workforce is old, and getting older. Close to one-third of federal employees are over 55 years old, and another third is eligible for retirement within the next couple of years. Meanwhile, only 8% of government employees are under the age of 30 — the very people who need to acquire the knowledge to ensure the gears of government continue as senior employees retire.

In response, the U.S. government is trying to actively recruit young workers. Headlining the strategy are paid internships and jobs that come with financial incentives such as education loan repayments. These sorts of perks tend to attract younger millennials and especially members of Generation Z.
With the tech industry's spate of layoffs and cutbacks over the past several months, young tech workers have become a recruiting target, especially for Veterans Affairs, as managers aim to fully implement zero-trust cybersecurity measures by 2027.
Additionally, in a relatively new strategy, the federal government has begun holding job fairs around the country. And the government’s official jobs website, usajobs.gov, has a continually updated list of open jobs, including some available on Long Island.
