Bethpage-based Balfour Technologies, a homeland security software maker, said it has won the Tibbetts Award, from the Small Business Administration, in recognition of its innovation and job creation.

Balfour was the only Long Island company on the list of 44 businesses receiving this year's SBA awards.

This is the first time the Tibbetts awards were given out, and the SBA plans to make it an annual event.

The award honors outstanding small businesses and individuals who take part in its Small Business Innovation Research program.

It acknowledges the businesses' "critical role they play in research and development for the government and for their success in driving innovation and creating new jobs."

Balfour is at the Applied Science Center of Innovation and Excellence in Homeland Security, on Grumman Road West in Bethpage.

Its specialty is "four-dimensional, integrated visualization technology for a variety of markets."  It has patented fourDscape, which it describes as a "four-dimensional browser that enables automated situational awareness for human interaction, analysis and response through a fully integrated single 4 dimensional landscape."
