Flak over track idea at Calverton

James McNaughton's mother believes that mourners at Calverton National Cemetery should not be disturbed by the sound of car races, so she opposes the idea of building a drag racing strip on undeveloped property at the nearby Enterprise Park, a Riverhead news website reports.

Michelle McNaughton's son was an NYPD officer and U.S. Army Reserves staff sergeant who was killed in 2007 by a sniper's bullet in Iraq.

He's buried at the national cemetery. He was 27.

His mother spoke at a Tuesday night meeting of the Riverhead Town board, RiverheadLOCAL.com reports. She spoke in her capacity as president of the North Fork chapter of American Gold Star Mothers Inc.

She said, "My son and 20 other KIAs are laid to rest there … Calverton National Cemetery is sacred ground."

The town has nixed a proposal to build a billion-dollar theme park at the EPCAL site. Now a race car enthusiasts' association wants to install a drag track there, but must first get town approval.
