Food equity programs get a $20G boost

Sustainable Long Island has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the JPMorgan Chase Foundation.

The grant will help it continue to address "challenges and potential solutions to the issue of food equity" and the "lack of access to healthy, affordable food in Long Island's most distressed communities," the Bethpage-based organization said in a Friday news release.

Amy Engel, the group's executive director, said in the statement, "Now more than ever, Long Islanders are seeking assistance for basic necessities, perhaps the most basic being the need for food."

Specific planned uses for the money include development of a food system report card, youth-run farmers' markets in Nassau and Suffolk, and the creation of a youth food policy council.

In Sustainable Long Island's approach to food equity, it looks at ways of helping communities overcome disadvantages in access to fresh produce and healthy food options.
