Higher prices for fall fashion and breakfast staples helped push inflation up 0.2 percent in the greater New York area last month, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Compared to July, apparel costs were up 5.8 percent in August, with the introduction of fall and winter lines.

And higher prices for bacon, sausage, eggs, potatoes and coffee drove food costs up 0.3 percent.

The area consumer price index is up 1.4 percent from a year ago.
