Northrop Grumman Corp. has chosen five high school students as recipients of its 2011 NextGen Engineers Scholarships, a competition sponsored by the company's Battle Management and Engagement Systems Division.

Four of the five are Long Island students, according to an announcement from the division, which is headquartered in Bethpage.

The winners were selected from among 80 applicants. The competition was open to high school students from the areas where the battle management division has offices – Long Island; Brevard County, Fla.; and Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties in Maryland. The children of Grumman battle management division employees are also eligible, even if they live outside these areas.

This year's winners from Long Island are:

Daniel Bach, of Syosset, a student at Syosset High School.

Laura D'Aquila, of Lloyd Harbor, a student at Cold Spring Harbor High School.

Matthew Gus, of Hewlett, a student at Lynbrook High School.

Arthur Phidd, of Baldwin, a student at Baldwin High School.

"We're honored to award five scholarships and internships to these deserving and highly talented students," Pat McMahon, vice president and general manager of Grumman’s battle management division. The fifth winner is from Florida.

"Our winners join a distinguished group of 25 past recipients, many who have gone on to join our company after graduation from college."

Each scholarship winner will get $10,000 toward a four-year college education -- $2,500 per year, Grumman said.

Northrop Grumman also tries to place each student in internships at a Grumman battle management facility for three summers during the four-year college program, the company said.
