With the July Fourth holiday falling on Saturday, Independence Day for government workers and the financial community is being observed on Friday nationwide. Celebrations will still take place on Saturday. Here's the breakdown of what's open and what's closed:

Government offices

Federal and state, as well as public schools and libraries, will be closed Friday. This includes the state DMV, Nassau and Suffolk county courts and some county and local departments. Check https://www.nassaucountyny.gov/ and https://www.suffolkcountyny.gov/ for details.

Mail and parcel service

Post offices will be open and there will be normal mail delivery on Friday but there will be no mail and post offices will be closed on Saturday.

Courier services like FedEx and UPS will have no service on Saturday — though UPS will operate normally Friday, while FedEx will offer modified service for some of its delivery categories.

Financial institutions

Most banks and the financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange, will be closed on Friday. ATMs, online banking and mobile banking services were expected to remain available regardless of branch hours.

Retailers

Most supermarkets, big box stores except Costco and shopping malls will be open, although some will operate on modified hours.

Transportation

The Long Island Rail Road announced off-peak fares will be in effect systemwide the entire weekend. The LIRR will operate on a modified weekday schedule Friday, but will feature "early getaway" afternoon trains out of Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal. The LIRR said it would operate on normal Saturday and Sunday schedules.

The MTA has added enhanced afternoon and evening subway service to its major lines on Saturday to accommodate crowds for the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Show.

State and local parks

Most federal, state and local parks will be open, including Jones Beach and Robert Moses state parks. Many town parks, including the Town of Huntington, are featuring extended hours for pools, beaches and spray parks.

Museums

Some local museums — the Long Island Children’s Museum, the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum & Reichert Planetarium, the Huntington Museum of Art — will be closed on Saturday. The Cradle of Aviation will remain open but close early at 3 p.m.

Major museums, such as the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan and the Sagamore Hill National Historical Site in Oyster Bay will be open with modified schedules.
