Freeport grad wins $10,000 scholarship for campaign against texting and driving

A winning campaign urging drivers not to text and drive has earned Freeport High School graduate Jenell Muir a $10,000 scholarship. The 18-year-old was honored Friday as the winner of the 2014/2015 New York Auto Giant iDrive No Texting and Driving awareness campaign.
Muir, who will attend Howard University in Washington D.C. this fall, received the scholarship check in a ceremony at the Atlantic Hyundai/Nissan Superstore in West Islip, headquarters of New York Auto Giant, operator of the 22-dealership Atlantic Auto Group. New York Auto Giant director of business development Toni Anne Fardette and director of advertising and marketing Tony Fiore presented the check along with iDrive founder James Billings.
Muir's year-long campaign included creating a public service video focusing on the dangers of texting and driving.
"Jenell's effective approach in reaching her peers and community through social media, video presentations, handing out information and speaking engagements really made her stand out," said Billings, owner of IndustryMuscle.com.
