Look for efficiencies, such as security-check lines with more seasoned-looking business travelers, said Stephanie Leber, 25, of Roslyn. Families and others juggling lots of bags can slow the line down.

Put your laptop through screening first, not last. Leber said she's seen people forget the laptop as they became distracted with getting their shoes back on.

Always bring food and buy water after clearing security. You never know when you'll be delayed onboard, and airlines have cut back on meals and snacks.
