Closed GameStop stores in Valley Stream, Hempstead Town among hundreds being shuttered by end of January

Two GameStop stores on Long Island that recently closed are among hundreds of locations the video game retailer is shuttering by the end of January.

The store at Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream closed in late December, said Richard Madramuthu, vice president of leasing for The Macerich Co., the Santa Monica, California-based real estate investment trust that owns the mall. The store opened in June 1996, he said.

Another GameStop closed this month at the Five Towns Shopping Center in Rosedale, said Ackeem Bowen, superintendent for the retail property. He was unsure when the store opened.

Five Towns Shopping Center straddles Queens and Nassau County, with the GameStop in Nassau, in the Town of Hempstead.

GameStop closed 590 stores in fiscal 2024 as part of its “store portfolio optimization review,” and the company said it planned to close a “significant number of additional stores in fiscal 2025,” which ends Jan. 31, according to GameStop's annual report published in March.

GameStop is closing 475 additional stores this month, WKYC reported.

The Grapevine, Texas-based retailer did not respond to a request for comment.

There are seven remaining GameStop stores on Long Island, including in Bay Shore, Massapequa and Patchogue.

As of Feb. 1, 2025, GameStop Corp. operated 3,203 stores worldwide, including 2,325 in the United States. The company also had 193 stores in Canada, 374 in Australia and 311 in Europe.

The company sold its Canadian business in May.

GameStop has been facing financial challenges in recent years as more as more consumers shift to digital game purchases.

The retailer's net third-quarter sales totaled $821 million, down 4.6% from $860.3 million in the same period a year earlier.
