The Garden City Hotel is seeking tax breaks from Nassau County to support a $26-million makeover on the luxury hotel, according to officials and documents.
The county’s Industrial Development Agency is expected to consider the hotel’s application for a sales tax exemption on building materials, furniture and other improvements.
Fortuna Realty Group purchased the 280-room, nine-story hotel in late 2012. It also is seeking a reduction in the mortgage recording tax from the IDA.
After taking over, Manhattan-based Fortuna hired Grady Colin to be general manager and required all 300 employees to reapply for jobs. All but 30 workers were retained.
The planned renovations include a new full-service spa and upgrades of the lobby and guest rooms, Fortuna’s Morris Moinian said in August 2012. The work is expected to take about 10 months and the hotel will remain open.
Separately, the IDA will consider an incentive package for Supreme Screw Products Inc. of the Bronx for a factory in Mineola.
