Gas prices on Long Island saw a steep increase of 10 cents overnight, AAA Northeast reported Wednesday.
The average price of regular gasoline across Nassau and Suffolk counties hit $3 a gallon Wednesday as the ongoing U.S.-Israel war with Iran that started Saturday has driven up crude oil prices and severely impacted oil refinery operations in the Middle East, AAA Northeast said.
Local gas prices are up 14 cents from a week ago, the roadside assistance nonprofit organization said.
Crude oil prices were just shy of $75 a barrel in early afternoon trading Wednesday. By comparison, prices per barrel were around $65 a barrel last week before the war began, Robert Sinclair Jr., senior manager of public affairs at AAA Northeast told Newsday Monday.
Nationally, gas prices jumped 9 cents from Tuesday into Wednesday and were up to $3.19 a gallon, 22 cents higher than they were last week.
