U.S. stocks end the trading day with losses

U.S. stock indexes closed with losses Tuesday.
ON WALL STREET: At the close, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 90.7 points, about 0.5 percent, at 18,313.8. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index slipped 13.8 points, about 0.6 percent, to 2,157, and the Nasdaq composite index gave up 46.5 points, about 0.9 percent, to nearly 5,137.7.
OIL PRICES: The price of U.S. benchmark crude slipped 41 cents to $39.65 a barrel in trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, the price of Brent crude, used to price international oils, dropped 25 cents to $41.92 a barrel.
CONSUMER SPENDING: Data showed U.S. consumer spending rose more than expected in June as households bought a range of goods and services. However, core personal consumption expenditures, the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measure, increased 1.6 percent in the 12 months through June, falling below the central bank’s 2 percent target.
