The Hauppauge defense and satellite communications maker Globecomm Systems Inc. has an $8.8 million contract extension to supply its blue-force tracking system to a NATO agency.

The battlefield friend-or-foe communications network "helps prevent fratricide or 'blue-on-blue' incidents," Globecomm said in a Tuesday news release.

NATO's communications and information systems agency awarded the contract extension, a segment of a multi-year deal. Under its terms Globecomm will provide "communication services and onsite support for the company’s previously deployed GPS-Based Force tracking System," the company announcement said.

Globecomm in February announced that it had garnered about $52.5 million in contracts from NATO to design and install a GPS force tracking system, bringing the combined contract value, after Tuesday's announcement, to about $61.3 million.

The system "enables NATO to identify where its personnel are located at all times, identify other multi-national forces and have the ability to do so in routine and operational situations," the company said.

In early trading Tuesday Globecomm shares were up $0.48 to $12.43, on light volume. Its 52-week range is $8.96-$16.43.
