Good news for Hamptons Radio
Listener-supported Hamptons Community Radio Corp. is one step closer to extending its reach on the East End with a frequency in Westhampton on 89.1 megahertz, the station said.
The station is largely staffed by volunteers and relies on listener memberships and other financial support, the station said. It offers original programming, such as community affairs, talk and music shows.
"The Federal Communications Commission . . . chose Hamptons Community Radio Corporation as the tentative selectee for a new full-power radio station," the station said in a news release.
Its application for the Westhampton-based frequency was filed in 2007, and tentative approval came this week. Following a waiting period for public comment on the FCC decision, Hamptons Community Radio hopes to get approval by October to begin building a station.
"Although it will be licensed to Westhampton, the signal will reach 25 miles in all directions from Westhampton, including Riverhead" and reaching more than 150,000 potential listeners, the station said.
Hamptons Community Radio already operates on frequency 88.7 in Montauk; and has an FCC license for 90.7 in East Hampton.
