Greenlawn plant to make F-16 radar

The Greenlawn facility of defense aerospace multinational BAE Systems has a new contract to make identification-friend-or-foe radar system for the U.S. Air National Guard’s F-16 Fighting Falcons.

The radar equipment, to be made in Greenlawn, helps ensure that U.S. warplanes don't shoot down non-enemy aircraft.

Full terms of the four year contract were not fully disclosed. The first-year order is valued at $17.2 million.

BAE will supply 90 AN/APX-113(V) combined interrogator-transponders.

The BAE friend-or-foe ID systems, known as IFF, was tailored for the F-16, the company says.

The system can “positively establish the identity of friendly forces, reducing the risk of friendly fire," BAE said in a news release.

"Our combined interrogator/transponder incorporates the latest IFF technology to enable war fighters to distinguish friendly and enemy aircraft," Sal Costa, director of identification and processing solutions for BAE Systems, said in the news release.

"This important upgrade will help ensure mission success and sustain the F16's position as a front line air defense aircraft well into the next decade," Costa said.

The Air National Guard is the world's largest operator of F-16s, BAE said.

The Air National Gaurd will use the friend-or-foe systems in domestic air defense and while assisting the Air Force tactical airlift support, combat communications, aerial refueling, and evacuation of wounded, BAE said.
