The changing face of Long Island isn’t a surprise to retailers that attempt to appeal to all ages and groups.

Grocery stores, for example, do extensive research to determine what should be on the shelves in particular stores.

“Each store takes on its own identity,” said Arlene Putterman, a spokeswoman for Shop & Shop stores in the metropolitan area. “We do a lot of research to make sure we are catering to all the different groups … We talk to civic leaders, schools, religious leaders to really get a flavor for what the community’s needs are.”

She said Stop & Shop doesn’t rely on the Census because it only occurs every 10 years. “We’ve already done our homework before the Census comes out,” she said. “Basically, what it does is confirm what are research has shown us.”
