Owners of Gurney’s plan to open their second luxury resort in Montauk this spring.

Gurney’s Star Island Resort & Marina, located on the site of the former Montauk Yacht Club, is slated to open in May after a $13 million renovation. The resort, located on Lake Montauk, will feature a newly renovated lobby, ballroom, guest rooms, restaurants and meeting spaces.

Manhattan-based developers George Filopoulos of Metrovest Equities and Lloyd Goldman of BLDG Management purchased the property in May for roughly $70 million, Filopoulos said Wednesday. In 2013, the pair purchased the original Gurney's Inn, located on the ocean on Old Montauk Highway and now called Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa.

"We have very high demand at the existing resort, and we want to be able to serve the additional demand," Filopoulos said. "Now we have a second property that has opportunities that are different from what you can do on the beach.”

He said access to the marina would also provide more opportunities to host weddings, as well as give guests better access to water sports. The two resorts are about a seven-minute drive from each other.

"Revamping the food and beverage" offerings at the Star Island location is a top priority, Filopoulos said. Showfish, the “centerpiece” restaurant at the resort, will serve locally sourced produce and seafood caught daily, he said.

The new resort has 107 rooms, three pools, a kid's club, a private beach and a 232-slip marina. The marina, which the owners say is the largest in the Hamptons, will also get upgrades, Filopoulos said.

The resort will offer complimentary shuttle service between the Star Island site and Gurney's Seawater Spa resort.

Yacht and seaplane service will also be available for guests to visit Gurney's Newport Resort & Marina in Rhode Island, which Filopoulos and Goldman opened in 2017.

The owners undertook a dramatic transformation of the original Gurney's Inn after purchasing it from its longtime owners, the Monte family.

Once a beachside destination for middle-class families and celebrities, the new Gurney's has become a more upscale destination for affluent vacationers.
