Hauppauge's Hyatt has new management

The Hyatt Regency Long Island, a Hauppauge hotel,  plans to change its management company -- but the hotel won't change its name and won't lay off any  employees, the hotel's spokesman said Thursday.

There was bit of confusion about the hotel's plans after the state Department of Labor published a mass layoff notice saying the hotel planned to lay off 128 workers by Dec. 7.

The notice, technically known as a WARN, or Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, was "just a technicality" required because the hotel is switching management companies, said sales and marketing director Michael Bonawandt.

"We anticipate retaining 100 percent of our employees," Bonawandt said. "The only thing that will change is the name of the company on their paychecks."

The hotel is now managed under the aegis of Hyatt Corp. itself, which hired the current staff. But the hotel's owners, Ashford Hospitality Trust, of Dallas, decided to bring in a new management company.

Bonawandt said Ashford chose the Remington Hotel Group, also of Dallas, as the new management firm and it will take over as of Dec. 8, with the hotel's name and its staff intact.
