Henry Schein and Cablevision are in the Fortune 500

Two public companies on Long Island made the annual Fortune 500 list, which was topped by Exxon Mobil, the magazine announced today.
Henry Schein Inc., a distributor of medical and dental equipment, ranked 303 on the magazine’s list of largest U.S. public companies, which is based on 2011 revenue. Melville-based Schein moved up 14 spots with revenue of $8.5 billion, a gain of 13.3 percent from 2010.
Cablevision Systems Corp., the cable television provider that also owns Newsday, placed 348 with revenue of $7.25 billion last year. That was a down 1.5 percent from 2010. Bethpage-based Cablevision was 321 on last year’s list.
A change from the 2010 Fortune list is that Arrow Electronics Inc. is now headquartered in Colorado. The distributor designated a Denver suburb as its main office in November, instead of Melville.
Arrow, with revenue of $21.4 billion, ranked 133 in this year’s magazine, up seven spots.
In the competition among states, New York was surpassed by California and Texas. Fifty public companies on the list called the Empire State home, while 53 were based in California and 52 in Texas.
This isn’t the first time that New York hasn't been tops in public companies.
