Henry Schein Inc., Long Island’s largest publicly traded company by revenue, has been ranked first in its category in Fortune magazine’s list of the world’s most admired companies.

Henry Schein topped all health care industry wholesalers in making Fortune’s list for the 13th straight year. The Melville-based distributor of dental, medical and veterinary products and services was the only Long Island company to appear on Fortune’s list.

Fortune compiles the ranking by surveying 692 companies from 30 countries. Within the 57 industries, companies are rated on nine criteria.

“Our first-place ranking in each of the nine subcategories, including social responsibility and global competitiveness, demonstrates again that a company truly can 'do well by doing good,' ” Henry Schein CEO Stanley Bergman said in a statement citing Benjamin Franklin and his philosophy of enlightened self-interest.
Apple was the No. 1 most-admired company overall. Rounding out the top 10 were: Amazon.com, Google, Berkshire Hathaway, Starbucks, Coca-Cola, Walt Disney, FedEx, Southwest Airlines and General Electric. The top-ranked New York State company was American Express at No. 11.

Within the health care industry wholesaler category, Henry Schein was trailed by McKesson, AmerisourceBergen and Owens & Minor.
