Henry Schein picks Peter McCarthy to head $3B veterinary products unit

Henry Schein Inc., Long Island's largest public company by revenue, Tuesday announced that veteran executive Peter McCarthy will lead the company's veterinary products unit, which had 2014 sales of almost $3 billion.
McCarthy, who will move to the health care products distributor's corporate headquarters in Melville, will oversee the company's global animal health business in 19 countries: the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Malaysia and 14 in Europe.
The Animal Health Group posted double-digit revenue growth in 2014, making it Henry Schein's fastest growing business unit. It reached 27.9 percent of total company sales, up from 26 percent in 2012. The unit's 2014 revenue of $2.9 billion would have made it larger than all but three of Long Island's public companies.
In addition to becoming president of the Animal Health Group, Henry Schein's second largest business unit, McCarthy will join the company's executive management committee.
McCarthy, previously based in the United Kingdom, oversaw the company's animal health businesses outside of the United States and Canada.

McCarthy previously held executive roles at Schering-Plough Animal Health (now Merck Animal Health).Henry Schein's dental unit is its largest, accounting for more than 50 percent of the company's 2014 revenue of $10.4 billion.
Earlier this month, Henry Schein acquired 50 percent of Romanian veterinary products distributor Maravet with annual sales of about $23 million. In 2009, the company established an animal health business in the Czech Republic, and in 2013 it acquired veterinary company Medivet in Poland.
