Hospital group manages risk better

Catholic Health Services of Long Island has received an award for improvement of its risk management procedures.

The health care system got the Best Practices in Risk Management award from Physicians Reciprocal Insurers, a medical malpractice insurance company.

Catholic Health Services hospitals won the award as the result of a  team training program used at three of its hospitals, the insurance company said.

The Catholic system operates Good Samaritan in West Islip (seen above); St Francis in Roslyn; St Joseph, in Bethpage; St Charles, in Port Jefferson; Mercy, in Rockville Centre; and St. Catherine of Sienna, in Smithtown.

The insurer did not say which three hospitals took part in the program.

"After the implementation of the program, all three facilities experienced a significant reduction in the rate of adverse events, with one hospital experiencing a 42 percent decrease,” the insurer said.

With a total of 1,600 beds, the Catholic Health Care  hospitals each year handle about 8,000 live births and 87,000 medical surgical discharges.
