How Long Island companies were named

The Bethpage-based company's roots are actually in Queens, when Michael J. Cullen opened what's recognized as America's first supermarket in a vacant garage on Jamaica Avenue in 1930. Long Island company names have a fascinating history.
For instance, an Austrian immigrant set up his first store -- in Brooklyn -- after he stopped touring with his orchestra.
There is also the Polish immigrant who sold hot dogs near the beach in Coney Island, and the supermarket chain that's named after a Long Island family that remains involved in the business today.
