Indian prime minister meets with LI business executives

Members of the Indo American Business Council met recently in Manhattan with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The business leaders, from Long Island and New York City, spent an hour discussing immigration, electricity distribution, trade and political representation with Singh and India’s external affairs minister and national security adviser.

The council, based in Hicksville, represents small- and medium-sized companies and seeks to foster trade between the United States and India.

Council president Kanwal S. Sra told the Indian officials about proposed U.S. immigration legislation that would limit the number of technology workers from India permitted to work here and the harmful impact on small companies.

Mohan Wanchoo, chief executive of Uniondale-based EC Infosystems and council treasurer, spoke about Smart Grid technology, which secures and upgrades electrical distribution networks. “Smart Grid solutions are an essential element of climate change mitigation,” Wanchoo said.

Council members reported that the Indian leaders invited them to continue the talks during a future trip to India. The prime minister was in New York to speak to the United Nations General Assembly.
