Infant deaths prompt Graco stroller recall
WASHINGTON - Baby gear maker Graco is recalling about 2 million strollers after receiving reports that four infants died in the strollers.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the recall Wednesday, said the four infants became trapped inside the strollers and were strangled. The deaths occurred between 2003 and 2005.
The strollers being recalled are older versions of the Graco Quattro Tour and MetroLite strollers and travel systems.
CPSC says if babies aren't strapped into the strollers properly, they can slide through the opening between the stroller tray and bottom of the seat - where they can get stuck and be strangled.
The recalled strollers were sold between November 2000 and December 2007.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled strollers, the commission said, and contact Graco for a free repair kit. Graco's toll-free number is 877-828-4046. Naomi Edlin-Miller of East Northport told Newsday she was glad she never had a problem with her MetroLite travel system. "I still use it for my now 4-year-old," she said of her daughter, Lía.
She said she has decided she didn't need the repair kit, in part because her daughter could no longer fit in the space where infants have gotten caught. - AP, with Emi Endo
