Rep. Steve Israel (D-Dix Hills) will be holding a demonstration of a computer hacking Friday in order to raise awareness and support for a cybersecurity bill that was blocked by Congress Wednesday.

Israel will be joined by executives from Fuoco Technology — the tech arm of Hauppauge-based Fuoco Group, an accounting and consultancy firm — and members of the Long Island Software and Technology Network.

The cybersecurity bill would have created new ways for the government and private businesses to share cyberthreat information, and set new standards on computer systems on public and private infrastructure. It was blocked in a Senate vote Wednesday right before Congress went into recess.

Israel hopes to show how necessary the cybersecurity bill is to protect personal — and possibly, national — security by demonstrating how easy it is to hack into a computer system, a spokeswoman for the Congressman said.

The event will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at the Long Island Tech Mall at 200 Parkway South Dr. in Hauppauge.
