Canon PowerShot SX30 IS

CNET rating: 3.5 stars out of 5 (Very good)

The good: Flexible lens range; excellent image stabilization; features for every kind of user.
The bad: Generally soft, noisy photos at full size; overall slow performance; no raw capture.

The cost: $369- $517

The bottom line: The Canon PowerShot SX30 IS is a point-and-shoot camera with a 35x zoom lens. As long as you're not expecting much more than that, it's a very good megazoom.

Supplies of camera lenses made in Japan for Lake Success-based Canon USA, could lag due to power cutbacks and rolling blackouts imposed by a Tokyo utility, a news agency reports Thursday.

Reuters said Ohara Inc., Canon’s key supplier of camera lenses, has cut back from full capacity “and deliveries to customers could be affected.”

The Tokyo Electric Power Co. is rationing power service with rolling blackouts  after an earthquake and tsunami March 11 heavily damaged four nuclear power plants on Honshu island.

“The production interruptions at Ohara and rival optical glassmaker Hoya Corp. could impact production of digital cameras made by Canon, the world's largest producer, and others,” Reuters reported.
