Leviton Manufacturing Inc., a major electrical components maker based in Melville, has joined an industry organization aimed at standardizing LED plugs and sockets.

The trade council, Zhaga, is an effort to ensure that consumer acceptance of light-emitting diode technology isn’t hampered by competing standards.

Instead, consumer and commercial electrical products should conform to a single set of standards for the energy-saving LED devices, the group says.

Leviton, which makes more than 25,000 products, is described on Yahoo Finance as “a leviathan of electrical and electronic components” and a supplier to Home Depot, Sears and Wal-Mart.

“Standardized products will also increase buyer confidence in specifying and purchasing LED products that will be easily replaceable and commercially available,” Zhaga said in a news release.

The company makes switches, plugs, connectors, and integrated networks designed for home, commercial, and industrial uses.

Leviton also has been tapped by Ford Motor Co. to produce portable home charging stations for the Focus electric car.
