Leviton of Melville selling wire-making subsidiary

Melville-based Leviton Manufacturing Co. is selling assets of a subsidiary, American Insulated Wire Corp., the parent company said this week.

AIW was acquired by Leviton in 1936. The buyer is Southwire, a Georgia-based maker of wire and cable for electrical transmission.

Leviton is selling AIW brands and its manufacturing facilities in Douglas, Ga., and Coffeyville, Kansas, which produce electrical wire and cable products, the company said Monday. The sale is expected to close by the end of February.

"American Insulated Wire was acquired in 1936, and has been an integral part of Leviton ever since," Leviton chief executive Donald J. Hendler said in a statement. "However, as we continue to shift our offering to more value-added systems and solutions, we no longer see AIW's wire and cable products as strategic to the future direction of the Leviton Company."
