Melville-based Leviton Manufacturing has produced a new, slimmer electrical wall outlet that takes up much less room in wallboxes than traditional outlets.

The product, technically known as a ground fault circuit interrupter, or GFCI, makes it easier for electricians to work in cramped wallbox spaces, the company says.  The photo above shows a traditional outlet on the left and the new Leviton outlet on the right, each in a standard wallbox.

Leviton's trademarked name for the line of GFCI products is SmartlockPro.

The new slim version takes up 25 percent less room than previous versions of the product.
