NBTY, the Ronkonkoma-based maker of nutritional supplements, reported preliminary, unaudited results for its first quarter showing a 14 percent overall increase in sales.

Revenue for the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2009, were $751 million, compared with $661 in the year-ago quarter, according to the company, which markets products under several brands including Nature's Bounty.

For the quarter, wholesale revenue was $471 million, up from $407 million in last year's fourth quarter; North American retail sales rose to $51 million from $48 million, European retail rose to $176 million from $156 million, and direct sales, including Internet sales, rose to $53 million from $49 million, the company said. - Joseph Mallia
