A Long Island hedge fund executive is a million-dollar donor to a soft-money political action committee Restore Our Future, which has supported Mitt Romney for president by funding attack ads against his rivals.
Robert Mercer, chief executive of East Setauket-based Renaissance Technologies Corp., donated $1 million to super PAC Restore Our Future Inc. on July 28, newly disclosed campaign records show. The records are on file with the Federal Election Commission.
Newsday's business blog has previously reported on Mercer's donations, in a Jan. 25, 2011, story that said he made a $1 million contribution to the New York State Conservative Party.
Restore Our Future has purchased advertising time in Minnesota, Michigan and Arizona, The Associated Press reports.
Mercer also donated $100,000 on Aug. 1 to Club For Growth Action; and about $640,000 to Concerned Taxpayers of America. His soft-money donations on record total $1,743,750.
Mercer's donation was earlier reported by The New York Times.
