LI job growth slows
Long Island’s job growth, which had quickened in recent months, has slowed significantly, according to data the state Labor Department released this afternoon.
The Island had just 3,400 more jobs in April than it had in April, 2010. The private sector added 6,200 jobs. But a loss of 2,800 government jobs cut overall employment gains to 3,400.
Once again the lower-wage sectors added the most jobs. The education and health-services category, which includes private educational institutions, added 5,800 jobs, all in health care. The trade, transportation and utilities category, which includes retail, added 5,400 jobs.
By contract, construction, one of the highest-paying sectors here, lost 4,900 jobs.
On Tuesday, the department will report the unemployment rate for April. That rate is currently 7.1 percent.
