Long Island’s malls took a blow from the snow Thursday, and may again Friday.
While Roosevelt Field mall in Garden City, Walt Whitman Shops in Huntington and Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove all opened on time at 10 a.m. Thursday, many individual stores, including some big anchor tenants, remained shuttered, said a spokeswoman with the malls’ operator, Simon Property Group. The decision to close rests with individual tenants, she said.
About 60 shops at Roosevelt Field were closed, including Nordstrom and JC Penney. At Smith Haven, 57 were closed including JC Penney, while 45 stores were closed at Walt Whitman, including Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor.
Simon’s spokeswoman recommended calling stores before venturing out Friday.
In Valley Stream, Green Acres Mall opened two hours behind schedule Thursday, with several shops inside closed, a spokeswoman for the mall said.
The Tanger Outlet Centers in Riverhead and Deer Park also were closed, according to the retailer’s website.
As of late Thursday afternoon, Simon's malls and Green Acres were all still set to close at 9:30 p.m. All the shopping centers recommended checking their Facebook pages for updates.
