The head of Long Island’s most prominent business group, the Long Island Association, is stepping down.
Matt Cohen, the LIA’s president and chief executive since May 2021, said in an announcement on Monday, "I have decided to finish my term which was ending in June and explore new opportunities."
Cohen, 44, of Commack, didn't immediately respond to telephone calls and a text message seeking comment.
In a recording on his cell phone, Cohen said, "I'm no longer with the Long Island Association" and referred callers to the group's No. 2, Stacey Sikes, vice president for government relations and communications.
Sikes will serve as acting president and chief executive during the transition, according to the announcement.
Cohen has worked for the group for 15 years, first as vice president for government affairs and communications under then-chief executive Kevin Law and then succeeding Law.
“It has been an honor to help advance Long Island’s economic growth, support our hardworking small businesses, and create meaningful connections for business leaders across the region,” Cohen said in the announcement. “I am grateful for the LIA members, colleagues, partners, and friends who have made this journey so rewarding.”
Cohen’s departure coincides with the LIA marking the 100th anniversary of its founding.
Under Cohen’s leadership, the group has expanded its efforts to serve small businesses, minority-owned businesses and those on the East End.
Larry Waldman, the LIA’s longtime chairman, said of Cohen, “We are grateful for everything he has accomplished and look forward to following his continued success.”
Waldman also said a search for Cohen’s successor will begin soon.
