Long Island Press going monthly

The Long Island Press, the region's largest weekly newspaper that has covered Nassau and Suffolk counties since 2003, is decreasing its frequency to monthly.

The new publishing schedule, which Syosset-based Morey Publishing has been planning for about a year, will begin in January. The effort will include publishing a monthly magazine for women called Milieu, a stand-alone version of the tabloid's Best of Long Island Awards and several other specialty publications.

The Press' shift to monthly publication comes as many newspapers and magazines are struggling for revenue as readers increasingly consume news online.

Publisher Jed Morey said the changes will allow the company to more thoroughly "explore the niches that we are better at." Morey said the move will not require job cuts at the company, which has about 25 employees, roughly half of whom are in the newsroom.
