Two Lord & Taylor stores on Long Island are undergoing major renovations as the upscale retailer looks to modernize the locations.

The renovation projects are at the Manhasset and Garden City locations, and began in January. Construction at the 123,000- square-foot Garden City store will wrap up this fall, while Manhasset’s includes a 39,000-square-foot addition to the store that will be complete in fall 2017.

Garden City and Manhasset are two of Lord & Taylor’s top stores in terms of sales volume, a company spokeswoman said.

“Lord & Taylor is delighted to be adding to our footprint on Long Island where we have a long history and loyal customers,” Liz Rodbell, president of Lord & Taylor and Hudson’s Bay, said in a statement.

The Manhasset location, which was Lord & Taylor’s first branch store, opened in 1941 and celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. Once its two-year renovation and expansion is completed, the store will grow to more than 122,000 square feet.

The project will double the size of the ladies’ shoe department, upgrade floors, lighting and fitting rooms, and add new service desks and a personal shopping office. Also, there will be a new main entrance with two-story tall windows at the rear of the store, adjacent to the parking lot near Shelter Rock Road.

The renovation of the two-level store in Garden City will expose the building’s original exterior windows, as well as an atrium inside of the main entrance. The cosmetics area on the lower level will be enlarged with a new spa room and several new brands.

Both stores will remain open during construction. All entrances are usable at the Garden City location, but Manhasset’s rear door near Shelter Rock Road is currently the only accessible entrance.

Manhattan-based Lord & Taylor was founded in 1826 and is the oldest upscale department store in the United States. Lord & Taylor has 50 stores, including two other Long Island stores at Walt Whitman Shops and in Bay Shore.
