A dessert and quiche company based in Freeport has won a national award for exporting.

Love & Quiches Gourmet has been named small-business exporter of the year by the Export-Import Bank of the United States, which provides export credit insurance and other financing to U.S. companies seeking to sell products and services in foreign countries.

Love & Quiches began exporting in the early 1990s, sending frozen cheesecakes and chocolate cakes to the Middle East. Exports now account for more than 20 percent of the company's sales of $7.2 million last year.

Love & Quiches founder Susan Axelrod Thursday credited Ex-Im Bank assistance with helping the company to grow. It hopes to increase its export sales by 10 percent this year, she said.
