National Grid and LIPA have recently completed the first phase of a four-year energy-efficiency project at the Northport and Port Jefferson power plants, Arlene Gross writes in the Times Beacon Record newspapers, “aiming for greater energy efficiency, fewer pollutants and lower levels of greenhouse gases.”

She quotes a National Grid executive as saying the $100 million project has already reduced nitrogen oxide emissions by 40 percent in Northport, at left, and about 38 percent in Port Jefferson. "So we're very, very excited and delighted about the results," said Robert Teetz, vice president of environmental services for National Grid.
