Marchon Eyewear Inc. plans to create 55 jobs through a reorganization of its Long Island operations, an increase of 30 from last year's projection.

The maker and distributor of fashion eyeglasses and sunglasses recently determined more people were needed, Thomas Stringer, a Marchon consultant, told the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency.

Marchon has 528 workers in Suffolk. They earn, on average, $60,606 per year, records show.

The higher job creation number led the IDA last week to adopt more generous tax breaks in support of Marchon's plan to reorganize its headquarters and warehouses in Melville, and to open an ophthalmologic laboratory. The project is valued at $27.5 million.

Marchon initially received a sales-tax break of $600,000 on construction materials and equipment purchases. It also would save up to $1.4 million in property taxes over 11 years under a deal adopted last week that freezes payments for the first five years.

Marchon had considered locating the lab elsewhere. Other work now done in Melville could have been transferred to China and Montreal. "It's important to Long Island's economy that we keep companies like this," IDA chairman Jim Morgo said.
