Scholarships

Long Island students with an interest in marketing are eligible for college scholarships awarded by the Direct Marketing Association of Long Island.

This is the competition's sixth consecutive year. Up for grabs are two $2,500 scholarships.

They are awarded to students enrolled in accredited universities. Applicants should have an interest in marketing, communications or a related field.

The association is a not-for-profit, with an avowed mission to "provide an exchange of information that will increase members’ skills and keep them informed of developments in the field."

The group offers education and networking, and strives to promote public understanding of direct marketing.

Those chosen for the scholarship awards also get a chance to meet and learn from marketing professionals.

"This allows students to make critical connections that will allow them to gain insight into their field of interest," the association said in a news release.

Applications are due March 31.

For more information see the group’s online application site.

Here’s a definition of direct marketing, given in a Cornell University lecture by expert Steven A. Leveen:

“Direct marketing is all about measuring the effectiveness of your ad dollars specifically and then adapting those programs,” Leveen said in the 2010 talk, “whether it's solo pieces in the mail, space advertising in magazines, or the catalogs that we all get in our mailboxes.”
