Nassau has one of lowest NYS jobless rates

The jump in Long Island’s April unemployment rate was a sign that the employment market here weakened last month. The rate rose to 7.1 percent, from 6.6 the year before, the state Labor Department said Tuesday.
But the Island’s performance wasn’t the worst in the state. In fact, it looks pretty respectable when compared with other New York counties.
Nassau County, with a 6.7 percent unemployment rate in April, tied for third place with Rockland, Saratoga and Westchester among the counties with the lowest unemployment rates. Tompkins County, home to Ithaca and Cornell University, had the lowest jobless rate in the state — 5.7 percent. No. 2 was Putnam County, with 6.2 percent.
Suffolk came in 15th, with a 7.5 percent jobless rate. No. 62 on the list, or dead last, was Bronx County, with a 12 percent rate.
