NBTY Inc. has exceeded hiring goals at its new nutritional bar factory in Amityville, development officials said Thursday.

The vitamin maker opened the 60,000-square-foot plant last year, its second such facility on Long Island.

The $32-million project involved renovations to a warehouse and $18.6 million in equipment.

The board of directors of Empire State Development Corp. Thursday approved a $750,000 grant to NBTY.

In return for the help, the company promised to add 200 jobs to its local workforce of 2,400.

Barry Greenspan, of Empire State’s local office, said NBTY has surpassed that goal by eight jobs. He also noted the Ronkonkoma-based company has 14 facilities, all in Suffolk County.

Greenspan said NBTY had considered opening the nutritional bar plant in Pennsylvania but decided to stay here because of government incentives. The company is owned by the Carlyle Group, a Washington-based investment group.
