NBTY to cut 73 jobs as it outsources janitorial work

Long Island vitamin maker NBTY will eliminate 73 jobs in building cleaning and maintenance early next year, outsourcing the work.
Spokeswoman Andrea Staub of Ronkonkoma-based NBTY said the changes will be effective Jan. 19 when the new company, ABM Janitorial Services, takes over at all 12 of NBTY's buildings on Long Island.
A manufacturer, distributor and retailer of vitamins, nutritional supplements and related products worldwide, NBTY employs about 13,300. It is privately owned by the Carlyle Group, a Washington, D.C.-based investment fund.
ABM Janitorial is a subsidiary of publicly traded ABM Industries Inc. of Manhattan, with about $4.8 billion in annual revenue and 110,000 employees in more than 350 offices in 15 countries, according to its website.
Staub said the NBTY workers would be offered jobs either with ABM or elsewhere at NBTY.
A spokesman for ABM could not immediately be reached.
