Nearly 20 percent of Start-Up NY participants call Long Island home, and you can search our database to see who those start-ups are.
Tax-free zones at Stony Brook University and Farmingdale State College have attracted a diverse group of technology companies that specialize in every thing from vaccines and robots to medical devices and energy.
Start-Up NY businesses pay no state and local taxes for up to 10 years. Their employees pay no state income taxes for as long as 10 years.
The program has enrolled 110 companies in a little over one year. But Leslie Whatley, who runs the state initiative, said, "We have momentum and more businesses will be signing up this year."
Three local universities have tax-free zones: Stony Brook, Farmingdale State and LIU Post. Others have applied for them, she said at a recent event at Stony Brook.
